Superbrewed Food's postbiotic skips the cold chain by using dead bacteria
What Happened
Superbrewed Food has launched Thryvia, a postbiotic made from heat-killed Clostridium tyrobutyricum biomass that works at doses as low as 200mg per serving, formulated for capsules, powders, gummies, bars, foods and beverages. Because the bacteria are non-viable, the ingredient is shelf-stable at room temperature and can survive UHT processing — conditions that would kill a live probiotic.
Why It Matters
Probiotics have always been hostage to the cold chain and to processes like UHT that kill live cultures — a postbiotic built on dead biomass sidesteps that constraint entirely, which is why the company already has an FDA GRAS 'no questions' letter and is pushing into everyday functional foods rather than just supplements.
A postbiotic that doesn't need to stay alive to work — or stay cold to survive.
FET's Takeaway
For ice cream and dairy formulators specifically, a postbiotic that survives UHT and needs no refrigeration is the difference between a marketing claim you can actually put on a mix-in and one that dies in the pasteurizer — this is a far more processable functional ingredient than any live-culture probiotic.
