What Happened
German plant breeder KWS announced on 4 November 2026 that it has started selling a pea protein isolate made from a yellow pea variety it selected for food applications. According to the company, commercial volumes are available now to manufacturers in Europe and selected international markets, in conventional and organic versions. KWS says its breeding and selection identified naturally occurring traits associated with reduced bitter and beany notes, and it describes the isolate as clean-tasting, light in colour and well soluble. The peas are grown on selected German farms and processed within the EU. Target uses include protein beverages, powders, bars and dairy alternatives. KWS plans to show applications at Food Ingredients Europe in Frankfurt on 17–19 November.
Why It Matters
Until now, KWS's food pea work ran largely through co-development with brands such as Berlin pea-milk maker vly. Selling an isolate directly moves a seed company into the ingredient supply chain, where off-flavour, colour and solubility can decide whether pea protein works in a formulation.
Moving flavour control upstream to the seed is promising, but formulators will judge it on specifications the launch has not yet published.
FET's Takeaway
Our analysis: addressing beany notes at the raw-material stage could reduce the need for downstream masking or deflavouring steps, but the announcement does not provide protein content, isolation method, solubility figures, sensory panel data, capacity or price. Formulators should request specifications and pilot-test heat stability, viscosity and flavour in their own matrix, since varietal traits may vary with harvest and processing.
