Danone and Michelin open a €20M fermentation scale-up site to outside projects
What Happened
The Biotech Open Platform at Michelin's Cataroux Innovation Park in Clermont-Ferrand, France, is now open to third-party projects. Its investment grew from the €16M announced in June 2024 to €20M. It offers a complete fermentation line of up to 15 m³ plus semi-industrial purification, and works with yeasts, bacteria, microalgae and fungi to develop proteins, enzymes and food ingredients.
Why It Matters
Many fermentation startups stall between the lab bench and commercial scale because pilot-scale capacity is scarce. A shared 15 m³ line with food-grade standards addresses that gap directly, and a tire maker and a dairy giant are the ones building it.
Scale-up is where fermentation ideas go to die, so Danone and Michelin are lending out the tanks.
FET's Takeaway
The 15 m³ scale matters because oxygen transfer, mixing and heat removal change a great deal between bench and production vessels. A process validated at this volume carries far less scale-up risk than lab data does. Downstream purification at semi-industrial scale is the other half, and it is often what decides unit cost.
