What Happened

Senara, a Freiburg startup founded in 2022, has made Maastricht its second location following an investment from LIOF, Limburg's regional development agency. LIOF announced the move on 23 October 2026 and Green Queen reported it on 30 October; neither discloses the amount. The company grows milk-producing cells in a bioreactor; Green Queen says the cells come from milk rather than the animals. Senara has worked at pilot scale with a 100-litre bioreactor and previously indicated plans for an industrial-scale bioreactor by 2028. It is exploring its own pilot facility in Maastricht and has opened a new funding round for it. Applications under exploration include ice cream, cheese, panna cotta and cosmetics ingredients. Senara says it expects its first food products in supermarkets within a few years.

Why It Matters

A regional public investor is backing a cell-cultivated dairy company before it operates a production plant. Maastricht's network, including the open-access Cultivate at Scale facility, lets companies scale cell culture without first building costly plants of their own, according to LIOF.

Pilot work runs at 100 litres; the Maastricht plant is still a plan that needs funding.

FET's Takeaway

Our analysis: for a food engineer founding a small production startup, Senara's path illustrates staged scale-up from a 100-litre bioreactor towards an industrial-scale unit, with capex for its own pilot plant tied to a fresh funding round. Using shared facilities can defer that capex. The announcement does not provide titres, media costs, contamination controls or a food regulatory timeline, so viability cannot yet be judged.
